| DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge Day Hike http://www.fws.gov/midwest/desoto |
| Sunday, 27 July 2008 |
| DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge was established on March 12, 1958 under the Migratory Bird Conservation
Act of 1929 for "...use as an inviolate sanctuary or for other management purposes, for migratory birds."
The refuge lies in the floodplain of the Missouri River in a former bend of the river about 25 miles north
of Omaha, Nebraska. We will be hiking (exploratory) about five miles along four short nature trails and
various dirt roads in order to observe spring wildlife, especially migratory birds. Dress appropriately
for the conditions (if the weather is bad then the hike will be rescheduled). Ticks and mosquitos will be
out, so come prepared for them too. Bring water, snacks. We will carpool, so expect to chip in for gas and
parking if you ride. To carpool meet at the King Kong across from Rosenblatt on 13th St. (exit 454 on I-80)
by 8:15AM. If not carpooling be at the DeSoto visitor's center by 9AM. There is an entry fee of $3.00 per
vehicle and $1 per person Sierra Club fee. Don't forget your binoculars. We should return around 2PM. Bob Goetschkes, MVG Outings Leader bobbygoetschkes@hotmail.com 402-614-4788 |
| Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge Day Hike http://www.fws.gov/midwest/boyerchute |
| Sunday, 10 August 2008 |
| The area that is now Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was originally an island of sand and sediments
deposited in the Missouri River by the Boyer River. The Refuge is a joint Federal and local conservation partnership
designed to restore a portion of the Missouri River habitat that flows through the 2 1/2 - mile long chute and
parallels the main flow of the river. Riparian woodland, tallgrass prairie, and palustrine and riverine wetlands are
the major upland wildlife habitats that are being restored and protected. These habitats benefit Missouri River fishes,
migratory birds, endangered species, and resident wildlife.
This will be a six-mile hike on fairly flat terrain. If you want to go respond to this alert with e-mail containing your phone number -- if the weather is bad and I need to cancel I will call you. Please do not respond if you are not going. I want to get out to the refuge early to beat the heat, so we will meet in the northeast corner of the Canfield's parking lot (87th & W. Center Rd) at 7:15AM for carpooling. Expect to chip in for gas and parking. If you live north of Canfield's and want to go directly to the refuge then be at the main parking lot in the refuge by 7:45AM (see link above for map of refuge and directions). Dress appropriately for the weather and bring raingear if light rain is expected. Make sure you bring water and be prepared for ticks and mosquitos. Bring binoculars if you have them for wildlife viewing. I expect us to return to Canfield's before noon. $1 Sierra Club fee per person.
