Hiker Report: Boyer Chute -- 10 August 2008

Boyer Chute is an example of good environmental engineering. Channels off of the Missouri River are called chutes, and they create islands that provide valuable habitat for migrating birds and other animals. When the Missouri was "tamed" by engineering to keep its channel straight and deep for boat navigation, many chutes and their habitats were destroyed. In recent times this destruction has been noticed, and now the Army Corps of Engineers is working to restore some of these lost habitats. Boyer Chute was restored and is now a National Wildlife Refuge. We had a great day for the hike, and the hiking was easy, scenic and free! This location is ideal for a cross-country ski outing in the winter, so stay tuned.

I finally got my entire family on an outing!
